LIFESTYLE, LEISURE, PLACES & HOME

Preparing for Christmas

For some reason, since I’ve been married & had children we’ve always had Christmas Day at either my parents or brother & sister-in-law’s house & we’ve always done Boxing Day. That’s been lovely but I really wanted us to do Christmas Day this year so that is the plan.

I’m a huge planner, I love it and there’s no detail left unplanned to make it a wonderful day this year.

My first thing to organise is the kids advent bags & Christmas Eve boxes. Yes they’re both teenagers but I adore getting these ready for them with lots of small gifts, one for each day in December (only small items like chocolate bars, shower gel etc) then the usual PJ’s, hot chocolate, a Christmas decoration etc etc for their Christmas Eve boxes. I love family traditions and I’ve done this since they were tiny.

I like to get my gift shopping done as early as possible for friends & family and wrapped & distributed in good time. It’s not very environmentally friendly but I do still like to send Christmas cards too.

Christmas Day will be a Grazing Board starter when they arrive with a champagne cocktail, then a huge traditional Christmas dinner with all the trimmings. We’ll be watching the first King Charles 3rd speech too which will be sad not seeing The Queen but nice for the country to support King Charles.

The lead up to Christmas is always wonderful and we’ll be watching all the Christmas films, going on cinema trips, going to Manchester for ice skating, watching a pantomime and all the other traditional activities that make it such a special time!

BEAUTY, HEALTH & STYLE

Pre Christmas beauty preparations

Most events are on the lead up to Christmas so I like to get my hair done a week or so before ready for pre Christmas parties! I get my nails done regularly so I tie in a new set for the lead up to Christmas then also on the 23rd ready for the Christmas period. Nothing feels right if my nails aren’t done!!

I like to spend December taking extra care on my skin, giving myself regular home facials. As the weather gets colder, skin can get a little dull so it’s important to keep it hydrated.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

Harveys Bar Kitchen – Westgate Huddersfield

The original Harvey’s is a stones throw away from my home at the village of Fenay Bridge in West Yorkshire and my family, friends and I have visited regularly since it opened. The owners created a wonderful brand and very soon opened another restaurant in Holmfirth. They exceeded expectations with their take away service during lock down, so much so that they are currently preparing to open a Harvey’s take away near their flag ship restaurant. But, as they came back from covid stronger than ever due to their fabulous service, food and ethics they have also opened a fabulous new restaurant in Huddersfield town centre.

My friend & I visited last week and had a wonderful time. It has the same Harvey’s décor and ambience, the menu is the same but with an additional sandwich section of the menu to cater for a busy town centre lunchtime service. A restaurant I love and I’m thrilled to see them doing so well.

FILM/TV SHOW OF THE MONTH

The Crown Season 5

There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding this series and I must admit, I watched it with slight trepidation. I adored the first two series and enjoyed 3&4 but, the closer it’s getting to the present I do find it slightly uncomfortable to watch and I can’t help but feel sad for our Royal Family knowing this ‘drama’ is being portrayed as fact.

It’s a beautiful series, the acting, sets, direction, costumes etc etc are simply wonderful. However, it is loosely based on facts with a lot of dramatization in and amongst and I strongly feel that, like all TV dramas, Netflix really should put a disclaimer on it to say much of it has been dramatized. I’m pretty sure many people watching believe it all to be completely factual which is sad as it doesn’t always portray the Royals in the best light which I feel is very unfair.

All that said, yes I’ve watched it & it was just as brilliant as the other series, I’m just not enjoying it quite as much the nearer to present day it’s getting.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

The Hearts Invisible Furies – John Boyne

A beautiful book that gripped me from the start. Set in 1940’s Ireland up to present day, the book follows Cyril Avery (not a real Avery) in a time when intolerance cloaked in Catholicism is at its height. It is a novel that makes you laugh, cry & everything else in between whilst reminding us along the way of the human spirit.
