LIFESTYLE, LEISURE, PLACES & HOME

Doubletree by Hilton – Chester

I love all Doubletree Hilton Hotels and this one is no exception. I spent a wonderful weekend here last week with a group of good friends for my best friends 50th birthday and the hotel was excellent. Lovely rooms with very comfortable beds, great service and lovely food in the restaurant. We also spent a wonderful morning in the Spa which was bliss and I enjoyed a heavenly elemis facial. I’m lucky to enjoy such lovely experiences and I can’t wait to visit The Doubletree Hilton in Cheltenham in a few weeks time.

BEAUTY, HEALTH & STYLE

Spring Style in your 40’s

During the transition period between seasons it can often be difficult to know what to wear, especially with our ever changeable British weather!! But at last!!! I can feel Spring in the air and I cannot wait. Spring is my favourite season and I also love Spring into Summer fashion. The weather and daily life in the UK has felt very grey recently and, although I love my winter wardrobe and always try to bring a lot of colour into my clothes, I cannot wait to bring back some brighter colours and some lighter and more fun items into my wardrobe. As you move into your 40’s & 50’s I think it’s important not to be frightened of colour. It’s too easy to hide behind black’s brown’s and greys every day. They do of course definitely have their place and I for one love them, but, wearing brighter or pastel colours lifts your mood and makes you look instantly brighter and fresher.

I spent a day shopping in the lovely city of Chester last week and it was lovely to see how colourful the upcoming season’s fashion is. Shops such as Zara and French Connection were glowing with glorious colours as you walked through the doors, and I instantly felt uplifted. I can’t wait for a few upcoming shopping trips to add a few more pops of colour into my Spring wardrobe.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

Miller & Carter Chester

Being a steak lover this restaurant is right up my street & I’ve dined at a few different Miller & Carter restaurants around the UK.

I went to the Chester restaurant during a weekend away for my best friends 50th & we had a wonderful experience.

The service, food & drinks were first class and the steak cooked to absolute perfection.

It’s not a cheap night out but it’s not ridiculously expensive like many restaurants are getting since covid. It was definitely value for money and Miller & Carter is a chain I trust and will return to whichever city I’m in if I’m looking for a great steak.

COCKTAIL OF THE MONTH

PINK LADY

Appearances can be deceiving, and such is the case with the Pink Lady: Freshly squeezed lemon juice plays alongside pomegranate-based grenadine, and the drink packs a two-spirit punch of gin and

Applejack that belies its pretty pink hue.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ounces London Dry gin
  • 1/2 ounce applejack
  • 3/4 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1/4 ounce grenadine
  • 1 egg white
  • Garnish: brandied cherry

Steps

  • Add all ingredients into a shaker and vigorously dry-shake (without ice).

Add ice and shake again until well-chilled.

Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Garnish with a brandied cherry.

FILM/TV SHOW OF THE MONTH

The Gilded Age

I adore ‘Downton Abbey’ so when I heard that writer Julian Fellowes was creating another period drama based on the same era as Downton but set in New York I couldn’t wait. New York is my favourite city in the world and the late 1800’s-early 1900’s is my favourite era so I couldn’t wait to see this come together written by someone as brilliant and knowledgeable as Julian Fellowes.

It started a little slow and does take quite a bit of concentration following it due to the large cast with lots of different families to get to know along with the servants in each household, not just one like Downton. However, it looks visually stunning, and the performances are all excellent and I’m enjoying my weekly fixed. I do find I’m watching each episode twice to ensure I’ve not missed any details.
